Keira Village was a coal mining hamlet west of the port of Wollongong in the 1880s. It was founded in 1880 but the population exploded in 1886 creating a heavy demand for housing. Some small-scale farming was also carried out. It was close enough to the sea for a ship's carpenter to reside. It is rather hilly, being in the foothills of Mount Keira, but there are numerous flat areas as well. As the crow flies, Keiraville is slightly to the north-east of Keira Village, and some people may have used both locations in their address at various times. As the George and Helena had at least five children registered in Wollongong in the 1880s and 1890s it would appear that they were pretty well settled here. Shipping arrivals and departures were very frequent in Wollongong at this time. Port Kembla had not yet been developed and the railway to Sydney opened in 1887 but shipping continued.
